Nobeldiplom med mina akvareller

Den som tilldelas ett Nobelpris får ta emot en prissumma, en guldmedalj och ett personligt utformat diplom där ett originalkonstverk ingår. Diplomkonstnärerna utses av Kungliga Vetenskapsakademin och i år hade jag den stora äran att måla konstverken till Nobelpristagarna i kemi.

Nobelpriset i kemi gick i år till K. Barry Sharpeless, Carolyn R. Bertozzi och Morten Meldal för utveckling av klickkemi och bioortoginal kemi.

Klickkemi handlar om ett flexibelt och effektivt sätt att sammanfoga molekyler, där man åstadkommer en reaktion för att få molekyler, som tidigare var mycket svåra att sammanfoga, att “klicka i” varandra – inte helt olikt ett molekylärt lego. I uppdraget att måla konstverken till diplomen till pristagarna tog jag fasta på klickreaktionen som idé.

Akvarellerna i de tre kemipristagarnas diplom utgör varsin del av en triptyk med skogsmotiv. En triptyk är ett konstverk uppdelat i tre bilder, som vanligtvis endast kan sammanfogas på ett enda sätt om motivet som helhet ska bli begripligt. I den här triptyken kan man emellertid kombinera målningarna på vilka sätt som helst – de kan, så att säga, “klickas” ihop.

Uppdraget att göra konstverk till Nobeldiplomen är treårigt och jag kommer de kommande två åren göra konstverken till ekonomipriset samt till Nobelpriset i fysik.

The Nobel Prize in chemistry – with my watercolours as diploma artwork

When you are awarded a Nobel Prize you recieve a prize sum, a gold medal, and a diploma decorated with a piece of original art. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences assigns the artists, and this year I had the great honour of painting the artwork for the diplomas for the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

The Nobel Prize laureates in chemistry 2022 are K. Barry Sharpeless, Carolyn R. Bertozzi and Morten Meldal – “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry”. Click chemistry is a flexible and effective way of connecting molecules, and when I was assigned to make the artwork for the diplomas for the laureates, I wanted to somehow reflect that idea. So I made a triptych, with a Swedish forest scenery, that works in an unusual way.

A triptych is one artwork, divided into three parts. Usually those three parts can only be put together in one specific order. If you assemble the triptych in any other way, the image will not work. The Nobel Prize diplomas-triptych is different, in that it can be assembled in any order and still function as an image – just as if it would have been “clicked” together.

The assignment to make artwork for the Nobel diplomas stretches over three years and the coming two years I will make the paintings for the Prize in Economic Sciences and for the Nobel Prize in physics.
