Hi!

How very nice to meet you!

I’m Elisabeth Biström, a Swedish watercolour artist based in Norrtälje, an hours drive north of Stockholm. Originally I’m from the very north of Sweden, and that’s were I still draw a lot of inspiration; the Bothnian Bay sea with it’s rocky shores is one of my most beloved places and motifs to paint.

My art is about finding joy and awe in the small things. It’s a gentle reminder of not rushing past all the interesting and beautiful moments that surround us. That’s what I hope to share with you through my paintings.

I hope you’ll enjoy my art while you’re here and if there is anything I can do for you (yes, I do ship internationally), don’t hesitate to get in touch. You’ll find me at info@elisabethbistrom.se.

Have a great day!

Nobel Prize diplomas

Since 2022, I’ve had the honour of being commissioned to paint the Nobel Prize diplomas in Chemistry and Physics and the Economy Prize, on behalf of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Foundation.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022, K. Barry Sharpless

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded Carolyn R.Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry”.

I wanted to pay tribute to their work by making the diploma artwork into a kind of “click-triptych”: three paintings that can be joined toghether in any order – similar to molecules joined through click chemistry.

Each one of the Nobel Prize laureates is awarded a prize sum, a golden medal and a hand written and leather bound diploma with an original artwork.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2023

Nobel Prize in Physics 2023, Ferenc Krausz

In 2023 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Anne L’Huillier and Ferenc Krausz “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter“.

The light dancing over the surface of the ocean might not be as brief as an attosecond, but I found the motif fit for celebrating this achievment nevertheless.

The assignment to make the artwork for the diplomas spans over three years, which means that 2024 is my final year as a Nobel Prize diploma artist. It has been a great honour.

The Economy Prize 2024

The Economy Prize 2024, James Robinson

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel 2024 was awarded to Simon Johnson, Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson for their work on how societal institutions impact the economy of a country. In short, the laureates has shown that inclusive institutions are foundational for economic prosperity.

I wanted to visualize this connection in my diploma paintings, and chose to focus on construction sites around Stockholm, where the City Hall – venue for both the city council and the Nobel festivities – served as a backdrop.

I named the paintings “Prosperity”, “Progress”, and “Power”, borrowing frequently used terms from the laureates’ research.

Watercolour paintings

As a full time fine artist I spend most of my days in my studio, working on a painting or three. Most of the times the work is self-initiated, but from time to time I do commissioned work. It might be for an organization, for a book cover or a magazine illustration – or for private buyers that want a special piece for their home or as a gift for a loved one.

Here’s a few examples of what my work can look like.

I grew up by the sea far up in the North of Sweden and I still have a place there, where I go to paint a few times a year. This piece is called “Awake in light”.
This painting is about taking the time to experience the small but important calm moments. When life is full of obligations, the smallest of breaks can make all the difference. The title of this painting is “Rest here for a moment”.

In the north of Sweden the summer nights never go dark. This is one of a series of paintings where I tried to capture the warm midnight light.

Sunrise at 3 o’clock in the morning. I make sure to catch at least one of these nights every summer.
The nightly sunlight makes the rocks glow like gold.
I mostly paint nature and find inspiration in whats around the corner of my home in the woods. But since 2020, I’ve also followed the reconstruction of an area in Stockholm called Slussen. Combining the rough surfaces with the sheer watercolour expression is an interesting challenge.
A while back I got the oppotunity to go underground, to experience the construction of a new subway tunnel underneath Stockholm. This is one of the paintings I made from the site, where I tried to capture the atmosphere deep down in the rock.
