Hello and welcome!

I’m Elisabeth Biström, a Swedish watercolour artist based in Norrtälje, an hour northeast of Stockholm.

Originally I’m from the very north of Sweden, and I still spend as much time as I can there. The Bothnian Bay sea with it’s rocky shores is a never ending source of inspiration.

My art is about finding purpose and wonder in small or peculiar things that are easily overlooked.

I hope you’ll enjoy my art while you’re here and if there is anything I can do for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch. You’ll find me at info@elisabethbistrom.se.

Have a great day!

Nobel Prize diplomas

In 2022-2024, I had the honour of being commissioned to paint the Nobel Prize diplomas in Chemistry and Physics and the Economy Prize, on behalf of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Foundation.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded Carolyn R.Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry”. I wanted to pay tribute to their work by making the diploma artwork into a kind of “click-triptych”: three paintings that can be joined toghether in any order – similar to molecules joined through click chemistry.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2023

In 2023 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Anne L’Huillier and Ferenc Krausz “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter“. The light dancing over the surface of the ocean might not be as brief as an attosecond, but I found the motif fit for celebrating this achievment nevertheless.

The Economy Prize 2024

Nobel Prize Diploma by Elisabeth Biström

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel 2024 was awarded to Simon Johnson, Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson for their work on how societal institutions impact the economy of a country. Their research concluded that inclusive institutions are foundational for economic prosperity. I wanted to visualize this in my diploma paintings through depicting construction sites around Stockholm, where the City Hall – venue for both Stockholm city council and the Nobel festivities – served as a backdrop. I named the paintings “Prosperity”, “Progress”, and “Power”, using central terms from the laureates’ research.

I mostly find inspiration in nature, but since early 2020 I’ve also documented the reconstruction of an area in Stockholm called Slussen. Combining the rough surfaces with the sheer watercolour expression is an interesting challenge.

A while back I got the oppotunity to experience the construction of a new subway tunnel underneath Stockholm. This is one of the paintings I made from the site, where I tried to capture the atmosphere deep down underground.

For the months to come these are the kind of views I’m immersing myself in. In October 2026, I’m showing my construction site paintings at Karby Gård in Täby, Stockholm. Welcome to attend if you happen to be in town!
